Hi Guys, had pool & waterfall, set up in my FBT's, (false bottom, so toads could only go in shallow water), 2 x submersible filters/pumps, under clear perspex (drilled) base, tank was stepped up in three stages from the water end to the landside, just to try & stop toads draggin substrate into water. (Tank 4' W x 18'' D x 24'' H....water covered 1/3rd )
Looked lovely when it was all working, (would guage when water needed completley changed, visually & when flow of waterfall slowed down, due to filter membrane becoming contaminated). In the end became all to time consuming, stripping the lot out to clean, disinfect etc, so eventually removed & went back to semi dry set up with free standing pool that is much easier to keep clean, which will in turn ensure toads have a healthier habitat. So best of luck with your projects, (just my opinion by the way), look forward to the pics... Cheers...

a regular water change(1/3 at least 1nc a week) rather than waiting on contamination and also easy access to filter would have prevented this, water can be clear yet contaminated also changing all the water will destroy any good bacteria in yer filter ![]() |

I have had many problems with set ups in the past...but if you are patient, have loads of money and time to get it right...it is worth it. My waterfall is actually a peice of Mopani wood that had a great natural shape that just needed a little drilling to make it deeper so the water would flow properly. It falls into water pool that is shallowed using large rocks covered by smaller ones and gravel. Some of these come up to the surface...all powered by pump.
I marked on the outside of the tank with two little lines to show max and min fill. These allows me to watch how much evaporates and make sure the pump has the correct depth. I change water once a fortnight (only about a litre) Instead of going for false bottom, I decided to sink two large plastic watertight containers that have a drainage layer, then soil and plants. This also displaces water so I am not using as much. I find it makes the tank much easier to disassemble if needed. I have this same type set up in two tanks and have had no problems like I had with false bottoms. Hope this helps.
