Ok. Popular starter species to check out!

Vietnamess blue tree frog - Tall viv, eats crickets, locusts etc

White's tree frog - Needs a tall vivarium as it likes to climb, same food as above

Fire bellied toads - Need a 50/50 land water set up, plenty of keepers here to help you out.

Fire bellied newts - Aquatic newt, don't keep them so can't help much.

Fire or Tiger salamanders - Eat crickets and earthworms etc, need to be kept under 70F.

All will be nocturnal, most amphibians are.

As first pets, it's hard to beat fire-bellied toads; colourful, responsive, easy to feed (ok, greedy!) and active during the day, as well as the night. They're quite social, so I'd recommend getting three or four. Of all my frogs and toads, they still provide the most entertainment.

FBTs are a good starter amphibian, but i dont agree about being the most entertaining. Depending on the type of frog you are looking for there are many different choices. do you want a terrestrial frog that is big and bulky, or do you want an aboreal frog that is slender, do you want a frog that hops or a frog that jumps. do toads float your boat or are frogs for you? there are so many things to consider when picking a first amphibian as a pet it is realy down to what the individual wants. yes there are species that are more suited to a beginer but there are also species that with a little extra time and effort spent are just as rewarding and just as hardy.

try looking at these different familys and see which catch your eye the most, then when you have an idea of what you are looking for we can help and advice you from there
Bombinatoridae
Bufonidae
Hylidae
Megophryidae
Ceratophryidae
remember not all of the species on these lists are avaliable but it will help to give you an idea of what you are looking for.
