Talking Pic's Of My Axolotls.

Hi,

Just posting some pics of my axolotls on my album

Just a wee story first.

I have Lexi my one eyes Lecustic, her eye was deformed when i bought her so i did not/do not know how the damage was done to her eye but i think it makes her special, she can still feed as the pics show, lol

My golden albino GLC (Goldie Looking Chain ) as my partner calls him,I resucued from a awful petshop underweight,no gills days away from death in my opinion and is on the way to recovery when i got him he never even had stubs and they are now on the way to hopfully growing fully back.

Beauty my black wildtype bit if a character i can tell you,lol

I also have my 4 babies Lecustics/Golden they look lecustic in colour but have golden eyes.

In some of the pics you will see me hand feeding them,in my opinion this is the best way to feed them as they interact with you and are more relaxed around you.

I always wash my hands before i feed them, and wash them again for every single tank i go into to make sure i am not passing anything between the tanks that may be on my skin,

Anyway thats my little story, im not managing to upload them onto the thread as it says im not allowed, but all photos are in my album.
Cheers

Nice axies!

Have you ever taken Lexi to your vet? That looks almost like an abcess to me, odd place to have one develop though.

Hi,

Thanks

Yeah Lexi went to the vet from her previous owner (I tracked him down to find out why she had the lump when i got her from the pet shop)

He told me that the vet said that it is not bad and as long as its not causing her any discomfort and she is eating fine she will be alright.

As you can see from my pics it does not bother her eating at all!!,lol

She is the greadiest of the bunch but sometimes her aim is a little off when she takes the bloodworm from my hand, lol

Stunning animals!!

I tried hatching some earlier on in the year, and then we had the unusual heat... i managed to keep the water temp at 19 degrees by using ice bottles etc but they just didnt make it

How do you keep your temps down? and Do you use any lights in for your tanks?

Hi Gemificus,

The tank size you need for just one adult is a two foot tank, and and additional foot for every axolotl you have.

I use a sand substrate for my axolotls, never use gravel as Axolotls are quite aggressive eaters and "suck" their food up with such a force that everything along with the food goes into their mouths.

Gravel can also cause impactation which can cause the axolotls to bloat up and die.

Big Pebbles,Bare bottom tank,Or play sand is best used.

I personally use play sand its cheap and easy to maintain,I dont like bare bottom tanks it is much easier to keep than a sand bottom but axolotls cannot get a grip when walking about as much as when they are on sand I was told.

Cause you have babies i wouild start of with a small bubbler pump, not to much current tho as axolotls do not like fast moving water.

I would get a little housie from a pet shop just something for them to hide in,and mabey a few small plastic elbows (my partner is a plumber so im always nicking them from his van).
Anything else you want to know just give me a shout

Hey Thanks!!

I keep my temp down in the tank by leaving my spare bedroom window open all the time,as you can imagine living in Scotland is Freezing!,
I also take of all the lids of the tanks in the morning before i leave for work, this stops the tanks steaming up and a combination of the lids being off and the window being open keeps the tanks cool,

If on the rare occasion i have seen the temp creaping i do a 20 - 30 % water change depending on what size of tank it is.
