Default Childhood common frog story.....

Ok, posted on an off topic discussion earlier and it got me thinking about something that happened when I was a nipper.....

My mates, my bro and me used to go up the fields behind our house as kids to collect frogspawn and bring it back home so we could watch the little tadpoles hatch out and turn into baby froggiesOne time, I think I was about 7 or 8 years old, one of the tadpoles that hatched out of the frogspawn wasn't normal common frog coloured at all, in fact it was multi-coloured! I distinctly remember it being red and yellow and I think there was another colour or two in there but can't rightly remember what they were. Now I cared for this little tadpole in my childish way over a summer and watched it turn from a multi-coloured tadpole into a multi-coloured baby frog! It always wanted to escape though (can't think why) but I wouldn't let it and one day I found it dead and dried up on the garden path (please don't call me cruel, I really liked it and obviously didn't know how to look after it!). I have never seen another one since and have never heard of anyone else seeing one, all the other frogs that hatched out of that batch of spawn were normal common frogs.

Any comments from anyone?

I used to collect frogs and we built a pond one year without my mum's permission...It was just a hole in the ground really. I think we ended up throwing my little brother in it.

I lived in the US when I grew up and loved going on frog hunts...one day I was walking along and was stopped dead in my tracks by what I thought at first glance was a cat in my path...it wasnt/...it was actually the biggest American Bull frog I have ever seen!

I picked it up from under the arms and the dangling legs were about a foot long.
I carried it home like this and put it in my garden...my mom and dad told me to get rid cause it would eat our kittens...that is how big it was.

Good times.

I used to catch common frogs all the time as a child - they are a polymorphic species, i.e. they come in all sorts of colours & patterns. I've seen bright red, bright orange & completley yellow specimins. There was one which turned up in my parents garden every spring without fail which was HUGE & was bright red with dalmation spots all over 7 would happily hop over to me to take a mealworm out my hand. Im sure my parents have photos of me feeding him, if I can find them I'll scan them onto my PC & post them
