I've just gotten him to eat a worm
I put it in his enclosure and he sniffed it then chomped it down in a few seconds. The worm was actually longer than the Sal when it stretched itself out. So it looks like I'm going to have to go digging up my garden tomorrow morning to get a nice supply of worms. How many should I feed him, and is it okay to just feed him worms if that's all he's gonna eat?

As for his size, not including his tail he's about 3.5 inches or 9cm. I didn't breed him myself I bought him from 888Reptiles and they said his hatch date was 08/08/09 and have given me no information on what he's previously been fed.

I've taken the mealies out of his tub, but they were only mini ones and he's still ignoring the crickets (which are classed as "medium" sized).

So, how old should he be when I try to feed him crickets again? I only ask because I need someone to eat all the damned crickets I buy for the scorpion. He barely eats any and I usually end up binning them all cos they've died in their tub. Grrr.

That seems somewhat big for one born in August this year, but not impossible, a pic would be good to see, the first thing mine eat when they leave the water is micro crickets and then onto bigger sizes, they can eat crickets no problem, say about the size of the sals head, oh and use brown crix too, black ones can eat chunks off the sal, toes etc

I'd happily upload a few (blurry, poorly taken) pictures if there was a decent upload facility instead of that rubbish "type URL" link you have to use. All my pics are in my pictures folder in my documents, not online somewehre, so how do I upload them?

Like ben said you need to make sure you offer suitable size crixs and not to put too many in for him as this can stress your salamander.

Matt

P.s look forward to seeing pics

I've uploaded some pics to my album entitled "Beowulf".
He's still only eaten that one worm and no crickets.

ok, now i have seen the pics, there is no way that is a august 09 sal, 08 maybe, but not 2 months old, if you were told that its complete BS , i have bred enough sals to know that.

Anyway it lloks good and healthy, so here is what i would do, if you have a focus diy store near you get a tub from them, they are about 2 foot long and just over a foot wide and 9 inches deep called a nice, made by wham and have a blue or smoke coloured lid, about a fiver and they are spot on for the sals easy to clean out.

Mine feed twice a week, but make sure the temp is cool, under 20c or they get stressed and dont feed, yours doesnt look thin, so dont worry about the food just yet as long as the temp is fine.

Ben

Yeah, they had written his hatch date on the receipt when I had him delivered. Maybe they just guessed.
That enclosure is about the same size as the bigger one I had him in. That was the same width and height, just 6 inches longer. Maybe he'll be alright back in that tank now he's had over a week to settle down. And the temp shouldn't be a problem cos my house is fooking freezing most of the time lol
*checks temp gauge*
It's actually at 17C right now which is fine, no?
