Salamanders curl up and sleep like cats do, and as they are mainly nocturnal and generally shy from bright light, so what yours is doing is quite normal.
Just make sure the temp is under 20c.
As for the crickets, a couple of minutes- no more- will slow them down enough to get them where you need them.
