ooo bugger. I'd tell him he can be prosicuted for having moved it thop!

Baring in mind you don't know what type it was (most likely a smooth Newt but who knows)

Newts are so highly protected they get more protection than the elderly!

yeah i believe you can purchase several species of newts, some which will most rpobably be able to live in a pond, whether they will stay there or not is probably a different story lol.

Triturus cristatus Warty (great crested) newt 1981 Triturus helveticus Palmate newt Sale only S.9(5) 1981 Triturus vulgaris Smooth newt Sale only S.9(5) 1981

Crested is fully protected. Palmate and Smooth are only protected from sale. That is all the protection newts have.

yeah its the great crested newt your not allowed to move but its unlikely to have been one of them probably just a smooth newt which wont like the pond this time of year it was probably looking for somewhere to hibernate

as for buying u can't really get any native newts in the shops as they have to be 2nd or 3rd generation captive bred (i cant remember which) and to keep a non native outside requires a fully escape proof enclosure

what license is that then?

the only newt you are prohibited to touch, move or relocate in great britain is the great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) but it would be very unlikely to be that.

Default licence

usaully only a pond warden will have a licence or some one who helps out with conservation projects, it was most likley to be a common newt (smooth newt) and there are know laws with toutching or moving the newt only selling them.

thanks

sean.

Yeah, i have a licence too, driving licence, firearms licence, licence to kill.
You could tell anyone you have a licence really, but i would have left it nearby rather than possibly introduce possible disease into another pond
