I've never been sprayed by any of mine but I've only been keeping them for just under 3 years so I guess there's still plenty of time! As a rule of thumb, they're very very mellow little critters and you'd have to seriously hack them off to warrant a spray (lol, I say spray but I doubt it looks anything like that, probably more of a squirty ooze!!). I guess wild caught would be more likely to realease toxin but that's just speculation

I did a google myself on the salamandrin toxin, and came up with not a lot!!!

But to clarify, the yellow/black colouration of fire salamanders are meant to act as a visual warning that they are at least distasteful, and they are mildly toxic to humans, but you would really have to do something like bite it to digest some of the poison. Its more likely to make us feel sick than anything else, but as i said getting some in a cut will sting somewhat, and gettting it in your eye would be somewhat painful and could cause possible temporary blimdness.

As many keepers of these will know, these guys dont go releasing the poison all the time and you would really need to harrass the sal or maybe trap a limb or similar to provoke poison release, i have seen it once within a group of S s werneri, when an individual grab a leg of another and was shaking the other like a terrier with a rat, the unfortunate sal that was grabbed did release poison, like a white milk, but slightly thicker from the glands all along its spinal pores, the offender promptly let go.

They are reputed to be able to squirt the poison about a foot, perhaps if come acrossby a badger or such like, but never seen it.
Also just to clarify, the all black alpine salamanders are just as toxic and the more colourful normal forms we are used to seeing.

Ben

Yeah, I'd say that a foot seems right for the pic I have in a book..they elicited the response by touching the sal with a electric probe with a tiny charge running through it so thats probably the reason for the big reaction...

The things scientists do for fun eh?

it will take a lot more than handling to make them exude poison, even ones in the wild dont do that when you pick then up, probably produced when they are in pain
