Next time there are lots about, set up a tub in a cool place (outhouse etc), filled 3/4 full with garden soil, with a thick layer of old leaves or a towel on top. feed them occasionally with a small amount of grass cuttings or used tea leaves once in a while. You can store them this way for months, or even breed them, although the culture does tend to go sour eventually. I used to cover mine with wire screen to keep out mice and so on.

So how many worms do you need to start a culture and how long doe it take to start off

This was a while ago, but I started off with about 10 big ones (we were digging over a veg patch at the time, lol), and I started noticing small ones a month or two later. I carried on collecting from the garden mostly- this was a backup for dry or cold weather. After about a year, I started again with fresh soil and all the worms I could pick out- as I said, it got a bit sour after a while, probabaly 'cos it was kept out of the rain, so it didn't get 'flushed' clean. The used soil was good on the veg patch, though!

worms life cycle is about 3 months approximately, i did all i need and put them in a soil filled plastic dustbin in my garage, every few weeks i take out some of the top layer of soil and replace with fresh, i would say i have about 2-300 worms in there of varing sizes

heh, culture some house spiders as well... my old Fire Sals used to go crazy for them, they'd actually come out during the day if you put a few in the tank, was the only time I ever heard em grunting during the day

You could also just bung a load of regular garden soil in a tub, and leave it for a few weeks - when you go back it should be full of little worms as the garden soil you put in the tub will already have thousands of eggs in it!!!!
