Talking New Axolotl Advice :D

Hello there!

I had the best Xmas present from my daughter... after weeks of secrective plotting... axolotl! yay!

He/she is leucistic and we've named him/her Itotia (it's a unisex name that means dance in the Nahuatl language)

I'm new to axolotls and would appreciate any advice/tips on care, environment, feeding and general happiness!

I have a 2 foot tank with sand substrate and a tunnel, a gentle water filter and the water was treated with Aquasafe water conditioner before putting it in the tank.

I'll add to this as I go along...

Itotia came couriered from exotic-pets.co.uk and was very well packaged and seems to have settled in fairly well...

... he/she seems in good heatlh with lovely fluffy deep pink gills, not damaged in any way or curled and she's been swimming about (seems very curious!) She's about 13cm long - and very pretty!

She's been eating liver, but didn't seem interested in food today... I'm going to get some live bloodworms and brine shrimp tomorrow, there seems to be differing advice about how often they like to eat etc, so any advice would be welcome!

Very happy with my new little friend! xx

Congrats on your very first axie! Do you have some test kits to check the water quality in the tank? (Test for ammonia and nitrite are the most important ones). Normally the tank should be 'cycled' before getting the axie, but you can do it now. Just keep changing a bit of water every day, if ammonia and nitrite readings go higher than 0. Both should be 0. If they are higher for any long periods of time, your axie will get ill, and may even die.
Good luck, enjoy your lovely new pet!

Try live earthworms ....they are the best source of food. If you want to use your garden worms, make sure they are well away from any areas that have had contact with pesticides. Liver should only be used rarely. Your new addition will possibly need feeding on alternate days, however axolotl like food an will 'beg'. Also be warned...1 axolotl will never be enough!!
This site has an excellent dedicated section for axolotl :- Caudata.org

Thanks for the advice! I have bloodworms for now & will get earthworms when the weather is less freezing!

I'm taking the water to an aquarium shop for testing so I can find out what else is needed...

... you're probably right - one may not be enough!

Itotia seems happy & has eaten again today - I will take some photos soon and post them
