Good luck with it - gonna be immense to have a `lake` at the bottom of the garden Are you gonna keep up with the older pond (which looks nice enough as it is!) or is it gonna be filled in?

Looks good, however surely it needs to be over 48" (4foot) in order of the fish surviving when the pond freezes over in the winter?

no not at all 2ft deep is fine for kio yes ponds do freeze over but we leave the pump on all year round and only part of the top freezes over, plus there are pond heaters on the market 2 prevent this from happing

This is correct mate with jap koi you really should go at least 4 foot deep, every foot you go down the water will stay warmer in the winter and just as important cooler in the summer so you won't get as bad weed problems.my pond was 6 foot deep and on cold icy winter days you would get steam coming off of it just a good flow 40L air pump in the filter and depth was enough so it never froze over.
Hope this helps

Regards

Jim

Also, if the koi get to be 18" - 2foot, then surely you would need a 4foot deep pond in order for them to be happy and dive down etc
