Yeah I could see they would be better by themselves, if you have some that are too slow to get the food then you just end up putting loads of food in to make sure they get a share and then you end up with high nitrates etc. I'm currently trying to plan what to keep next as I lost a tank full of fish, was such a disaster.
I have a 5' x 2' x 2', a 5' x 2' x 18" and a 5' x 12" x 18". I've got them all moved out from the living room while I fix a damp problem and redecorate etc. When I get them back in there I'd like to do things a bit differently and grow lots of plants etc.
I used to grow plants really well at one time, I had an amazon sword in the 5'x2'x2' that was so big it was touching both the front and back of the tank and I think about 18" tall and my fish used to grow big, now they seem to get stunted.
