Handling my Red Tailed Boa.

Posted 19-03-2010 at 02:40 AM by jayssnake1977
I am glad i have found this site, I have a Red Tailed Boa, He/ she Is my first snake...So i am having to learn on my feet. I have handling issues at the moment, I have had the snake from about 8 weeks old, He/she was born last July. But i had problems with feeding and shedding, due to this and the advice of not to handle the snake just after feeding and shedding i have had a long period of not handling Muscles, but now obviously he/she is getting bigger and i want to get to handle he/she again but i don't know where to start, Any advice?

i have a o9 boa so she is only a baby , but i try to handle her every day even if its just for 10 mins , i have to let her know i am there first , dont startle them , then touch them in the middle of the body and just gently lift them out of the viv.
if there is no s bend or hissing they are happy with you touching them , just try to be calm and no jerky movements , also make sure there is no loud distractions around you .

if you have striking and aggressive behavior from your snake then wear some thick gloves each time untill he or she realises that you are not a threat.

never approach from above the head or try and touch it till you have tamed he or she a little more because this will be percieved as a predator or threat ., but in time it will be fine

good luck !

Thanks for the advice Pandora. It has been very helpful it is exactly what i wanted to know. I did wonder about gloves but i was worried it may scare Muscles more. I will try your advice and hopefully I will be able to get he/she tame again. I used to enjoy handling Muscles and i think Muscles used to enjoy the opportunity for a nice stretch.
Thanks again.
