The secret diary of a Boelens Keeper (month 2)

Posted 17-07-2010 at 07:47 PM by Rain

First off, big thanks to Darren at CPR and Peter Foulsham for their help, support and advice.

Secondly, to those who asked, I've not given up on the diary, but lets be honest, there's only so much "new and interesting" things they do that I can report to you guys.

Anyway, A little update. She's still feeding, growing and doing snakey things as I would expect. In fact,...

The Secret Diary of a Boelens Keeper Day 4

Posted 19-05-2010 at 11:02 AM by Rain
Feeding night. This was always going to be interesting. I find the first feed is the one that sets up how the snake will be for the rest of its time with me. If it takes right away then all is good, if not, it’s the long, hard journey to find out what it takes to get it feeding. I’d handled her around 5pm, and then left her alone until around midnight, turned out most of the lights, and tried to get that Morelia response going.

Posted 19-05-2010 at 11:00 AM by Rain
I woke to find her on the bottom of her vivarium, at the cool end. She was given a good long spray, and here I discovered some interesting things. Firstly, she isn’t keen on being sprayed directly. She would much rather keep out of the direct line of the sprayer, I’ve put this down to her soft skin. I was supprised to find that boelens have a very soft, smooth skin, rather than the slightly rougher skin of a carpet, or a chondro. Secondly, she showed, what turned out to be some what of a morning...

The Secret Diary of a Boelens Keeper Day 1

Posted 19-05-2010 at 10:59 AM by Rain
So, after a couple of years of loving the boelens python, I’ve finally got one, it’s home, it’s been feeding well in the shop, it’s a F2 CF, and it’s had the best possible start in life. She’s a late 09 female, and is approx 16 inches long. She’s still got the brown markings on her back and belly, but her head is lovely and black with the creamy underside.
She’s living in a 60x60x45cm exo-terra, designed for one of my green tree pythons, however, this one has the standard mesh on the top of
