Default Different Incubators

Never done this before so was just wondering about all the different ways of incubating, how come you cant just put a tub with vermiculite on a heat mat and set temps acordingly?

I just tried this method with 1 of my small 7 watt heat mats, a plastic chinese takeaway tub, holes on the top for ventilation, vermiculite filled halfway and the temps i am getting are around 83 F surface temp and 88 slightly buried, is there any reason why this wouldnt work?

room air temps outside of the tub would also affect the temps inside as there's no 'buffer' ie: incubator or viv to keep it stable
a temp range of 83*F to 88*F could affect the eggs especially combined with unstable humidity and if the substrate dries ~ far better to either use a home made incubator or a bought one

You need fairly stable temps to incubate reptile eggs.
Convert a viv and put your eggs inside a box inside the viv.
I have a 4 foot by 2 foot by 15 inch cage that is converted to an incubator.
It is heated by a 120 watt heater on a pulse state.
Just sticking a carton on top of a heat mat will result in the eggs and substrate drying out.
