Need a Defra licence to transport animals by law mind and courier insurance for hire/reward purposes as a minimum.

Fair enough if your offering to do it for free if not it's illegal. sorry!

can you tell me a little more about this please? maybe a link or something?
im not up on this stuff and he would prob only do it for fuel costs anyway so wouldnt be making a profit. just getting experience on different roads etc really.
also i understand the defra licence thing, but surely that would mean that we would need to have one to transport our own animals?

Defra, UK - Animal health and welfare - Animal welfare - During transport - Publications and guidance

"On 5 January 2007, a Regulation on the protection of animals during transport came into force across the European Union (EU), with some elements coming into force in 2008 & 2009.
The Regulation applies to all those involved with the transport of live vertebrate animals in connection with an economic activity. For example:
  • livestock and equine hauliers;
  • farmers; and
  • commercial pet breeders.
The Regulation also applies to those working at:
  • markets;
  • assembly centres; and
  • slaughterhouses.
The Regulation does not apply to the transport of animals:
  • where the transport is not in connection with an economic activity;
  • transport to or from veterinary practices or clinics under veterinary advice; where the animal is an individual animal accompanied by its owner (or other responsible person) and is fit for journey; or
  • where the animal is an individual animal accompanied by its owner (or other responsible person) and is fit for journey; or
  • where animals are pet animals accompanied by their owner on a private journey."
So as I understand it you need a license to Transport an animal if it is not your own and the owner is not present.

As far as I know if you charge anything for the trip you would need a license. How you would stand if just transporting them and charging fuel costs I don't know sorry.

Again with insurance, if you are using an insured vehicle for any kind of commercial activity/any kind of work you need to check your insurance. Most Insurance company's will insure for work use for not much extra. However to courier you need insurance to cover you for Hire and/or Reward and on most insurance polices there are very specific exclusions on using the vehicle for hire/reward. Therefore if someone were to use their vehicle in this case they would have no insurance to drive that vehicle and could be taken to court for driving without (valid) insurance.

Hope that makes some kind of sense. I pay £2500 per year to have the correct insurance.
