Default Fools! Gecko sales.

I'm having a bit of a rant but i have to say that i'm sick of some of the fools on here either selling their Leos so cheap that its like they have no regard for their welfare or timewasters either asking to meet me for a sale then ignoring me or asking to buy for rediculously cheap prices!
Is it too much to ask for people to be sensible?
I saw a gecko on sale for £5 the other day!

Your entitled to your opinion as i am to mine, i think you'll find most breeders of Leopard geckos on here agree with what i'm saying. And most of what i'm complaining about is people asking if they can buy cheaply and cram as many geckos in a viv as possible to breed and sell for pennies when they find they have no space, which lowers the prices in the market meaning these poor animals get sold so cheaply that their lives aren't valued.
Someone in classifieds has asked if they can have a leo, doesn't mind if it has a foot missing as long as it breeds lol.

or maybe even they've tried to sell at the normal price and can't so they're having to shift at whatever price they can as they no longer have the room / want to carry have on paying for food for something they don't have room for and won't get any money on.
if you were putting value on the life of one, people would be asking a lot more than they can realistically get for them. At the end of the day, you breed and sell, if you can't sell at the market price you have to lower it before you end up losing more money

Even more reason for people not to buy Gecko's regardless of their condition (or lack of limbs as one thread said!) purely to breed as i said this is what bothers me, doesn't sound like they're going to be a well looked after pet .
If people can't afford to buy at cheap prices then it appears that they wont be able to adequately care for an animal at all.
I said be sensible, i think thats good advice

Seeing as I'm in the same area as you, I'm probably being messed around by the exact same people, so can sympathise with you there!

But I'm struggling to sell the few leos I've produced this year so have been forced to drop - not to stupidly low prices though, I'd rather hang on to them than give them away!!

Exactly, someone speaking sense. We've all had to drop prices as thats the market atm its a struggle but some people emailing and asking if they can cram however many geckos in the little viv and breed them regardless of their welfare, or people looking for freebies!asking to meet then not even cancelling I'd rather hang on to them like you said untill what appears to be a good home comes along.
Your prices seem fair given the market.

To play devils advocate for a moment......................

Any animal commanding a reasonable price is what attracts the chancers to start with. They see a quick buck from breeding and very quickly, the market is flooded, prices are plummeting and rescues like ours get inundated with the aftermath.

If Geckos had never atrracted more than 5 or 10 quid, there would be less of them around and the breeding would be done by serious hobbyists, eradicating many of the problems of disability we see through poor breeding.

Next up, APH.

Prices have peaked, litters are taking longer to sell and the "make money" brigade will move on, leaving alot of homeless hogs.

I agree with Meko.
Personally, I feel that there are way too many leos and beardies being bred (and more recently, cresties). If supply is greater than demand then prices fall drastically.

Just because someone is selling something for cheap, doesn't necessarily mean that they don't care about their animals. At the end of the day, most people breed their reptiles with the aim of moving most of the offspring on. It is a huge added expense to have to raise a full seasons worth of offspring for several months longer. It makes more sense (economically speaking) to move them on for a lower price than keep them and pay more for food and electricity etc.

This is the reason that I will not breed another leo or crestie.

Definately, everybody seems to be breeding their leo or beardie or corn.
