Default Suddenly no one wants their ferrets!

I've noticed that there is an influx of ferrets to be rehomed on here lately.
What is it with people?
It was only last spring/summer that everyone wanted ferrets and now a lot of those people are getting rid.

I think owners should think just as hard about buying ferrets as they do with dogs, cats etc.
Ferrets can live for 14 yeras or so, at the least 9-10yrs, so why are they so 'throw away'????

I know I have scars from one I got from here last year.

I'm sure some are genuine rehomes for genuine reasons but surely not all of them!

I have my lot here but thankfully they are fine with us.

I know their not ferrets, but i'm looking to get a snake in a couple of months time and there are constantly loads of corns, royals etc on classifieds which is quite sad. They just seem to get passed around from home to home and being bred, or people selling them as perfect age to breed! Seems like there are enough around by now.

I would love ferrets but i wouldn't get any while i have bunnies as i don't like the idea of predator and prey living in close quaters in the same garden.

So should breeders stop breeding and sellers stop selling.

What do you expect to see on a snake classifieds forum, plastic cars?

Well your Rabbit probably already does live in the same quarters as a preditor . There will be foxes about so no different . So long as you are careful there is no reason why you can't keep both. I have Greyhounds & Rabbits, i've never had any problems .

Ps Saxon, yes i too had noticed all the Ferret re-homes & wondered why.

Samurai,

I keep my ferets less than 2 ft from my rodents shed and rabbit hutch.
My rabbit, although she is a conti, nor my rodents give a damn.

The ferrets get a bit excited when I take live rats from the shed but the rat and hams dont' seem to realise at all.

Corny girl,

It seems to happen every year. The kitts are bought the year before and then for sale by the time they will be coming into season!
At least with rats, hams mice etc they only live a relatively short life so you can keep them whether you really want to or not but ferrets live a damned long itme, when looked after properly, so it does concern me that people dont' put more thought into it when they obtain them.

similar situation with parrots. people buy cute 'silly tame' babies but sell up when they reach adolesence & get stroppy & nippy.
