Default Paypal gift payments - avoid!

Some people don't seem to be aware of this ... if you pay via paypal and select "gift", then as a buyer you have no recourse with paypal should the buyer try to scam you. Paypal can't always help even if you use it correctly, but a little bit of buyer protection is surely better than none at all?

If the person you are buying from insists on you paying the paypal fees (which is against the TOS of paypal anyway... ) then this page will allow you to calculate exactly how much you need to send for them to receive the exact amount after fees.

isn't that against eBay selling rules rather than Paypal? if you're selling something privately and asking people to pay by Papyal, they can't dictate what you can and can't charge.

And even if you don't pay as a gift you can still get screwed, even if you have literally tonnes of evidence against the scamming as I found out.

Yes but as a seller we want to be covered against being scammed ourselves, with chargebacks and even if you have a signed for delivery it can still come back and bite you on the ass, we lost a wii last year like this and their was nowt we could do about it.
When i sell an angora ferret and people want to pay via paypal i always ask for PPG. Ferret1959 i don't believe there is a safe way to pay via internet. Blooming wish there was!!!

I have recently sold a T on here and took payment via paypal I insist always on payment being goods because it insures the buyer plus gives the buyer reassurance and security, At the end of the day Paypal fee's aren't exactly over the top.

I only pay as a gift if I have previously bought from the seller or have good feedback from others regarding the seller.

They may not be on a £10-20.00 sale but if someone is trying to send you money in the hundreds you start to see the amount of money go down fairly substantially. At the end of the day the seller is offering the buyer an easy option in most cases and gets penalised by having to pay to get paid.

Perhaps PayPal should offer an option where the buyer covers the fee’s using the same system as the normal goods transaction.

Paying the normal way is no safer than using the gift option.
Once a payment has been sent the seller sends the stuff out an the buyer can then reverse payment simple as that an not a lot can be done so buyer gets goods and money seller loses again.
I know as I sold something and two weeks later payment was reversed . He did this to a few people and we all lost out paypal could not get money back from a reversal as it's done through buyers bank at no cost.
I always insist on personal payment or gift payment at least then they can't reverse it.

David, Paypal have roughly over £2,000 per month from me in fee's so really I do understand how much fee's are.

There is nothing stopping anyone saying that they must cover the fee's I know on ebay it is against the T&C's but on private sales it is allowed. If someone is spending a fair amount of money and is using paypal then they surely can afford to pay for fee's.

It's the risks you take unfortunately life is a gamble.
