Would be far more helpful if people didnt stae 95% female etc in ads or sexed as female etc when its clearly too young.
Been quite a few threads like this recently. very misleading for people looking for sexed individuals especially when relying on couriers etc and planning breeding programmes

Isn't this a duplicate thread?
I think it is just the seller been honest about the acuracy of the sexing. If they said 100% female and it turned out to be male the buyer would not be very happy, when the ad is worded as 95% sure it is female if they buyer has a problem then it is not the sellers fault. I short they are being carefull not to miss sell. With snakes for example when selling I state in the advert probed female, most snake keepers know that probing is not 100% acurate so there can't really be any complaint, if I stated probed male then it is 100% male. Not other thread was pulled as it was getting personal when it was not about that person whatsoever.
and no i dont agree at all...If someone is selling as female or male if thats the harder to find and selling at full price for that item then it should be as described. An animla is either one sex or the other no inbetween and if you dont know you sell it as unsexed pure and simple. If you cant sex it due to age then sell as an unsexed sub adult or juvenile and price accordingly. People are just getting misled in sales and this can bugger up breeding programmes.

Quote:
you're making a sweeping and broad statement because you've had a few wrongly sexed animals in the past. most sellers are not out mislead people, they make a simple and easy done mistake. the sexing of any non diamorphic animal cannot be 100% accurate unless the witness of mating, egg laying or birth has occurred. there is always room for error, and to percieve this as perposeful deception for more money is unfair.

Im sorry Kirsten but your comments do not make sense.
If an animal can be sexed as male then its sold as male and there is no problem, Im on about sexing it as a female...in the case of a crestie.. without really knowing due to the animal not being mature enough to sex accurately. It can take two years to get a female to weight for breeding therefore careful planning needs to be taken into consideration when buying one if under weight. in the case of a crestie the difference between a male £40-70 and a female £120-£250 is quite large, add on to this a courier at £40 plus and its quite an expense to find out within a few months that the animal bought as female is infact a male. Now good breeders will sell an animal with a proviso that a replacement will be given if the sexing is inacurate, many of the people selling as females though Im sure would not do this simply because they dont have the stock to be able to. Even in the case of innacutate sexing and a replacement being sent this may end up being one a lot younger and putting a breeding programme back even further. Add onto this looking for particular morphs and it further complicates the issue especially if a sought after/difficult to find morph

Its not also a case of people out to make money its more a hope that they are the desired sex, all Im saying is if you dont know sell as unsexed simple as.
I certainly wouldnt sell anything as sexed if I wasnt 100% sure, Id rather sell as is at an unsexed price or holdback to make sure, I have 16 vivs in place for just this

At the end of the day, surely this is simply a matter of using common sense? If, hypothetically, I wanted to buy a female crestie to add to a breeding programme and came across an ad where someone was selling a 'guaranteed' female that weighed less than about 20g, then I'd either take the ad with a pinch of salt and move onto another or contact the seller via PM to ask, politely, why they felt justified in making that claim (after all, it could simply be a typo etc). If I was going to buy an animal (and especially if I was going to have to use a courier to collect the animal for me), then I'd want more detail than most sellers place in an ad anyway, so a few more questions really won't hurt (and I've always found that reputable sellers are more than happy to answer as many questions as a prospective buyer can fire at them, as it shows that they have a genuine interest in the animal).

I agree olivine - I think there should be some element of buyer knowledge here. If you are looking to buy a new animal, and you have researched first, then you will know that although sex can be roughly identified for leos and cresties via loupes and incubation temperatures (in the case of leos), sex cannot be guarenteed until that animal is sexually mature and you are aware of the risks in making such a purchase? How far should a seller guarentee an animal? I know in leos its easier because you can incubate for sex but even then, it is not always the case that you get what you incubate for. If a buyer is adamant that they particularly want a female, they should buy an adult. Yes adult females are more expensive with cresties but by the time you add up the food and so on, growing one on would be just as expensive with no guarentee of sex at the end of it. I do agree with Nic though - if you are selling a crestie under 20g that cannot be guarenteed as a female, it should not be sold at adult female prices. But in that instance, vote with your wallet and don't buy!

I have bought sexed crested geckos from various sources from 5 grams onwards.. all were correct.. one from rhac shack.. one from ace geckos.. and a fair few more
I also once bought a female at 20 grams who looked female to the seller and me the buyer.. later turned out male.. if you are not happy to buy an uinsexed animal then sex it yourself.. or buy an adult.. that way the seller is not forced to say 95% or 79% or 83% or whatever other percentage number suits the buyers.. If they the seller is 100% sure then really thats that. if the buyer is unhappy they dont have to buy ![]()
