Default Enquiry about Pugs

My mum and step dad are considering getting a companion dog for my step dad. he isnt well and has a lot of health issues. The doctor recommends he gets more fresh air if he can and a little exercise. He cant walk far, and if he cant meet the dogs exercise needs then my mum will of course do the honours, and they only want a small dog such as a pug.
they have already discussed the fact that if my step father should pass away (he is very poorly), then my mum will of course keep the Pug.
How much do Pugs usually cost? they are not bothered about the dog being KC registered or having pedigree papers. and will even consider taking on a slightly older unwanted dog.
sooooooo....
what price range can they expect to pay for a pug, either an unwanted one or one from a breeder?
And what exactly are their exercise and dietry requirements?
Also is their any breed related health issues with this type of dog?

If there are any breeders, i would also be grateful for any advice that i can pass on too them about this breed.

You might want to try the breed rescue clubs (List below).

The ones I have met have been very out going little people, I call them little people as they have big personalities (I so want one..lol)

They do cost quite a bit of money, the ones I have seen are upwards of £750, and to be honest with you (due to the amount of health problems they have) I would only get one from a KC recomended breeder.

Otherwise if they are just looking for a small dog you could join Dogpages and have a look as there are lots of rescues on there with quite a few smaller dogs.

Thanks so much
they pretty much have fallen in love with the Pug breed. As in thier words "they are a big dog in a small package andthey are like little comedians that are eager to please".
My step father also has had a bad experience with dogs years ago and has always been intimidated by them.... untill he met a pug a couple of years back.
will certainly be checking out those sites and passing on information, thanks again.

I would contact breeders and see if anyone has a older bitch or dog that is no longer part of their breeding program. BUT make sure you get it signed over to you as the breeder could demand it back if the felt like it.
good luck

Thats a great idea!!
How old should i expect an older bitch or dog to be if its no longer wanted for breeding? a slightly older dog or bitch is something that my mum and step father are definately ok with but they want a dog that is still reasonably active.

To be honest not sure with pugs - toy breeds live longer so I would guess sixish! My mum has taken on a tibetan spaniel this way (at six) - though has had to allow her to continue breeding. The understanding was one more litter, since that it has been maybe one more, and technically it just lives with her so she hasn't a choice, which is why I say get it signed over asap. Maybe able to get a male a bit younger if his show career does n't work out, though I'd expect anything around 2 years to go for £600 still.

Red face Pugs

Hiya,
This may be a daft question, but have you tried your local rescue...
Most of them won't re-home with kids - but that is not the case in this situ....
All the dogs in rescue have been checked etc for suitability, it may be worth finding out where your local one is...
Thanks...Netti xx

The money isnt really the issue, although they nearly had a fit when i told them this morning i'd seen pug puppies ranging in price from £750-£1200 , if they want something bad enough and they know its a worthwhile expense, they dont mind. however they were shocked when i told them i'd seen pug cross breeds going for a similar price as the lower priced pugs.

i think your right though, about 6 years old would suit them perfectly.

we have searched all the local rescues, but the problem is these dogs are so desirable that they just dont stay in them. the closest we came to one was at mount pleasant, they had a pug in and it was already taken within the hour of its arrival.
i guess we will just keep doing the research and hope to find a slightly older dog/bitch for them... you can never know too much about a breed and its characteristics
thanks for your help

This sort of breeder drives me insane. Fact once the dog is in your home that's it they can't dictate to you what does or doesn't happen to said animal at best they'd have to take you to a civil court to even attempt to enforce any written breeding contract. A dogs registration doc is just that a piece of paper that says 'registered owner' nothing about legal owner, signing papers over makes not a jot of difference to the courts even if there's no monies handed over.

Reasons for animals being rehomed anytime from 1 yr onwards is basically they've not developed to the potential the breeder had hoped, they've not fitted in with the rest of the pack, some just don't get along and cause a lot of problems but do great in a pet home as a single animal.

Pugs are a very expensive breed which is very odd to me as they don't have tiny litters like poms, they're not always the best of mothers very clumsy with some needing C-sections.
