Having done a quick google search, a lakeland is just a fancy name for a guinea pig that carries hairless.

Not sure why they'd be worth any more than a regular piggie, but pics might help

lakelands are usually around £50 if you can find one, so its a good price for a carrier.

all the different breeds are different prices, hairless are £80-£150 each usually

lakeland is not a fancy name for this guinea pig but its a bred who are breed specially to produce skinny pigs and to improve the breeding of skinny pigs, and the prices are more due to this fact, most breeders sell Lakeland carriers for £40-45 each.

Is that common in the piggy world then? As in the rat fancy - all rats cost the same to breed/feed/raise, so most reputable breeders dont charge any different for a bog standard top eared agouti than they would a fancy pants dumbo rex for example.

I assumed it'd be the same in the piggy world, it's a shame that profit is more important to some.

maybe but some breeds/colours are more desirable and so command better prices same as with most pets.

but then i`ve never met a cavy breeder where i have to sign a contract to home one, or provide vet references and take a copy of a wageslip to prove i can afford vet treatment like rat breeders do.

I think it is because hairless Cavies - or Skinny Pigs - are still quite harder to find than hairless rats and mice. I gave up breeding them because I worried myself silly about where they were going and whether or not people were breeding them purely for profit, as believe me, the the small breeders do not. They require constant warmth, and cleaning out daily if you don't want your house smelling like guinea pig wee ! They also eat alot more than hairy Cavies.

Lakelands are actually a breed that is now being shown in 'New & Emerging breeds' class at Cavy shows, they must be to a standard and will hopefully one day be recognised by the BCC. Not all Skinny Carriers are Lakelands really - a true Lakeland must be of the following standard:

'The Lakeland is a wire coated Cavy and should have a coat like that of the Lakeland Terrier .
Lakelands can be shown in any colour or mix of colours .
The coat should lie flat against the body have a good density and the texture should be as harsh and wirey as possible .
U5 exhibits do tend to have a softer texture which does harshen up as they age.'

and skinnys are banned from shows, so its all underground and secretive, lots of people have them but they are very hard to find.
