has its ears open?!?! or do you mean eyes?
I think they mean the ears have peeled off from the body and opened up, Unless you handle baby mice daily your not likely to notice this happen. why did you cull it? just because it was the runt? or was it showing signs of ill health? Runts are of ill health and in mice dont tend to live passed 8 week old in my opinion and experience. and how come you culled all the males? Males can be very hard to find homes for and when it comes to breeding its harder to get them to go back into groups once they have been bred and most people cant house a lot of males seperately. Ive culled down litters that are buck heavy although i havent for awhile as ive been selling most of my bucks off its strange because sometimes they sell and other times no one wants them other than pet shops however i refuse to seel them for 50p for the shop to either sell them for £1.50-£2, cull them and sell them as food or cull them to feed there snake "stock" Sorry post was a little long |

No I did mean ears are open, baby mice are born blind and deaf, and at around 3 days old the ears fling up and they start hearing. I culled the runt off because he was a runt there is only a 25% chance the runt would servive to 2 weeks old, as it is a lot weaker then its siblings and wont get much milk and die by itself so I ended its suffering. Also all boys are culled off due to it being very hard to house male mice as pets as they smell and no one wants a smelly mouse. And culling males off give the females more of a chance to grow up and be big healthy mice instead of small thin mice.

i would have homed the male mice for you rather than cull them. if only we could do this with the males of the human species
![]() poor little sods losin their lives cos of their pre determined gender. as for the runts, ive had runts of the litters survive before and live a decent life. i would have only culled a runt when it shows sign of decline or suffering and not before |

Although I cull to feed to the snakes I don't cull just because they are male.
Culling is an accepted part of rodent breeding unless you'd rather end up with hoardes of rodents that are not rehomable nor usable in a breeding project. I do on the other hand keep large numbers of bucks, for growing on for bigger snakes, in 3ft perfecto tanks and I've had no fighting etc at all. They have their toys and tunnels and chewys while they are growing up totally oblivious to the fact that they are to be used as food at a later date. This way I have happy, healthy food items for my reps. I also handle all my mice 'as if' they were pets so they have a very happy, albeit short, life. Rodents don't always show that they are in pain etc as they are a prey animal and if they showed weakness in the wild they wouldn't last long. Once you 'notice' a rodent is in pain it has usually suffered for quite some time.
