Are you after 'baldie' or 'hairless' rats as they are two different varieties????

I was just asking as 'baldies' actually have fur like a normal coated rat.
Rats with no fur or very little are hairless or double rex. You would prbably be better with hairless carrier does to breed from as the hairless does can have problems I've found. I've lost two does on their second liters as they were unable to deliver. They did well with first litters!!! I no longer use hairless doe in my program. I use hairless bucks and a variety of carrier does. I'm too far for you though although I do have 6-7 very nice little bucks here. Also try not to use the 'fuzzy' ones you have with the totally hairless as, unless you have history for them, they are more than likely to be double rex. I never use rex in my hairless breeding. I think it just confuses the lines. Just thought......wherabouts are you? My OH and I are coming down to Pontypool at the end of March if you were interested in some of my kitts? Good luck in finding some nice healthy hairless.

i hve been pretty lucky with my rat breeding. I am pretty sure that i have a mix of different tyypes of rats.....i have some normals that carry various genes, some rexes, some double rexes and some hairless. i have got some very pretty colours too from the selective breeding and thery are cute as buttons. and weirdly compared to your own experiences, i have never had any issues whatsoever with my visul females being mated with a visual male........except for one mum that didnt produce milk but her babies weent to anther mum to be fostered and are thriving now.

Both the hairless does I lost had a first litter no problem, I gave them a rest, then they died giving birth to their second litters.
I dont' have those lines now, I gave them up, I haven't tried to breed another hairless doe though as I dont' want to lose any more like that. I'm cutting back on my rats and hamsters. I'm only going to keep russian blue satin rex, russian topaz, powder/british blues in bareback, hairless mainly as pets, and a variegated line I have in rex coat. With the genes within my lines I will get other varieties in litters but I'm going to breed that out so I have true lines in the next few yeras. Currently I have blue roan rex, russian blue, mock mink, topaz, agouti's in berkie and variegated in both rex and normal coats, black variegated, silver fawn rex, hairless in most colours and russian blue agouti.
