there seems to be no decent documents out there with regards to bites.

I have been on venomdoc etc and not found the answers to my questions

does anyone know of any books or documents.

explaining in laymans terms -

case studies on bites
the 50 chart (dont know the correct name - i also am unsure on how to use the chat - the figures confuse me slightly)
The antivenins available for each species
bite procedures

do you as, as a DWA keeper. spend time putting together a bite procedure before you get the animal - if so - how do you know where to look for accurate info - does liverpool and london both stock all antivenins? or only some? how do you find this out.

LD50 charts would be so much better if they showed details on average amount of venom injected

for example - the common European Adder - here in the UK - its venom is very very dangerous

its only becuase the snake doesnt have much of it to inject - that it would be low in a threat chart

Honestly, the LD50 only works well if you are a mouse vet. Mouse bodies work slightly different to humans, so its a rough guideline at best. Example: Sydney funnelweb kills a man quickly, but has no effects on a dog.
The only real way to set up a bite procedure is to search for medical reports on previous bite treatments. Another route to go is to contact Sean Bush (venom er) and ask him. He will have substantial info for you. Then you can also go to the Univ. of Adelaide's website and search there. They have oodles of info too.

Basic bite protocol is all I have.
You have no right to know or ask what antivenins are stocked and personally if I was that worried whether LSTM or london stocked it I'd not bother keeping hots.

There are a number of species which are attractive to keepers and have no antivenin suitable so dont get bitten....

The trick question which is sometimes asked during a DWA inspection is "are you going to stock antivenin?"

The correct answer should be no cause you cannot buy it and how would you administer it anyway?????

DO not get bitten and if you do expect big trouble

I'm sure I'm right in saying...(and Tigersnake will put me right if I'm not...LOL)
But the sidney funnel web was thought to be not dangerous to humans for years due to the LD50 test.......It's venom does not effect a mouse after it is 24hr old.......

hospitals at least over here will be unwilling to extensively treat you without speaking to a proper doctor who knows how to treat envenomations, so as long as your protocols have the basics there then you will be fine, I didnt go too in depth with mine
