Default I really have learnt something new today!

I never knew that Male Duck-billed platypuses were venomous.....
I saw it today on TV and have to admit I was a bit gobsmacked!
So... thought I would share how naive and amazed I am...

Yes they are, I just thought they were cute, odd-looking mammals that laid eggs, didn't know about the venom.

Default platypus

Theres an Aussie guy called Keith Payne who took a whack from one a few years ago. He said that it was the worst pain that he had ever suffered and that includes being shot up and badly wounded in Vietnam. He's the holder of a Victoria Cross so he's a tough bugger, if he said it hurt I reckon it must sting a bit.

they are like a bizarre chimaera of duck, beaver and scorpion/venomous snake lol...possibly one or two other creatures as well.
great creatures for mammals!

both male and female Platypus are born with ankle spurs, but only the male has spurs which produce the venom,The defensin proteins are produced by the immune system. Although powerful enough to kill smaller animals such as dogs, the venom is not lethal to humans
