Did use aspen for most of mine until I realised I was paying a fortune when I sat down and worked it out. Most are now on unprinted newspaper or shredded paper. Only switch a few days ago but the young corns seem to love the shredded paper. But as said if it is a lizard or frog then would go for something completely different so depends what species we are talking about.

Reptile carpet seems good, but don't think spot cleaning would be very easy. Large woodchips seem widely used...?

Well I have leos and their substrates are similar to BDs I believe. I use ceramic tiles! No impaction risks etc easy to clean and look good. If you have worries about fitting them all you need to do is get one set size, see how many you can fit in, then just mark out how long/ wide the tiles need to be in order to fit tightly and cut them with a tile cutter!
