Question Stats stats stats!

Hey guys,

This may well be an obvious question but here goes....

When it comes to maintaining temperature, you use a thermostat hooked up to your heater and when the temperature reaches a certain level the thermostat will tell the heater to switch off. That's easy enough, but what do you do when it comes to maintaining humidity? Is there a "Humiditystat"!?

The reason i ask is that i am looking into setting up a tropical vivarium. I will be using a waterfall (most likely running during daytime and off at night) which i know will offer a certain amount of humidity.
What i want to do though is use a mister to give a real humid habitat (70-80% or so for some of the species i'm looking at)

Now can i hook the mister up to a stat, just like i would with a heater, so that when the humidity drops below a pre-set level the stat tells the mister to start up and then stop it when it's brought the level back up.

Or do they work the other way? (ie stat hooked up to a fan that kicks in when humidity gets too high?)

If anyone can help then i'll be extremely grateful!

just get a humidity gauge and spray the enclosure when needed, if your setting up a tropical enclosure use live planted plants and and a nice sized shallow water bowl and it should keep itself highly humid with spraying

If you will have a fairly large waterfall in there compared to the size of your viv, if you reduce ventilation you should get very high humidity. I have a waterfall in my dart viv, without spraying it hits 90+% humidity this can be reduced if i opened up more vents etc.. depending on what you want living in there!

You're looking for a hygrostat, sometimes also called a hygrastat and even a humidistat
