im after a wood that is relatively cheap, looks good, is strong because its going to be a viv stack and it needs to cope with humidity for a few years. what wood would you suggest for me to use and have you got a rough for "X" size?

Honestly, melamine sealed all over with silicone does the trick. Some companies are even offering two year guarantees with their vivs as long as they are sealed.
