what is "egg-crate"

Id like to build a viv for poison dart frogs and I want to make a false bottom.
I hear a lot about egg-crate but I don't know what it is in Dutch and no clue either what it's normally used for.
Can someone help me out?

yeah thats the stuff . used for incubating, creating dartfrog and false bottom tanks and also used in many fish shops for corals. thats probably the best place to get hold of it that i know of.

But what is it originally used for? I've browsed some pictures and saw it with lamps?
