Default What Uv is best to use

Hi there I have two Beardies and until recently thought the youngest was a female however it has turned out to be a male. I have had to divide my 4ft viv to seperate the two as they seem to be very aggressive towards each other. I have a new 4ft viv coming in a couple of days and was wandering has anyone used a compact uv bulb instead of a long tube bulb to provide the uv lighting. Money is really tight at the moment and I know a new starter would have to be bought as well as a bulb to go in the new tank all the ones I have found are really expensive. Someone suggested that I used a compact uv bulb instead. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi mate,

The proper answer is to use a tube, (36" in a 4' viv) as this gives a big footprint of uvb. The problem with compacts is the area covered by uvb is very small. If you imagine the uv leaving the bulb it does so in a "cone" shape tapering down to a point, as apposed to "fanning out" and getting wider as it leaves the bulb.

Hope that made sense?

So it is possible to use a compact, but it isn't recomended, and personally I wouldn't

Good luck

Jay

Compacts are good for turtles, where you want to concentrate the UVB on a smaller area, but in a viv I would always use a tube. There's usually always starter units in classifieds, or try eBay for a bargain.

Also, have there not been reports on compact UVBs damaging beardies' eyes? I'm not sure, but I did read something about that ages ago.

Ah, that's good then. I don't usually pay much attention to stuff about lizards (since I don't have any. Yet) but this caught my eye cos I use compacts myself.

Ok thanks everyone think I will stick to the normal tubes just incase would not want my Beardie to suffer or come to any harm. Will just try and find a cheap starter unit if possible.
