yeh wire mesh, that green garden holey stuff on a roll [if tight and correctly attached] works good.
OTHERWISE I use multiple large [9 inch by 8 inch i think] plastic household vents, they are between £2 and £4.50 each depending on where you go. b&q sell them. BUT MESH or the like is best for ventilation of course.
