Default thermostat for ceramic

right

bit annoyed as i carnt use infa red for my water dragon as he wont sleep and i carnt stand theveramic heaters. but considering hes got a new tank nearly ready i thought he mite as well have one again instead of a heat mat. the thing i was wondering was that because it emits no light can u use it with a normal habistat thermostat?

Yes you can use it with a normal thermostat but they are better with a pulse proportional thermostat.

I use Cermamic heaters with a Habi-Stat Thermostat and have never had a problem I know a lot of people use the pulse type but I dont see the differance to be honest apart from the fact there better with a light.

a ceramic can be controlled by either... a habistst temperature stat, pulse prop stat, pulse prop night time drop stat or a dimming stat, not a mat-stat though

Just to confirm, can you not use a ceramic bulb with a Habistat mat thermometer? Why is this? What's the difference between the mat ones and bulb ones (apart from the price!)....

opinions vary but my advice would be...
a mat-stat will work a heat mat, the wattage of a ceramic is too high for it, and its not accurate enough
a temp stat a pulse prop a pulse prop night time drop or a dimming stat will work a ceramic.
only a dimming stat can be used for a light emitting heat bulb because the others would give your lizard a disco by flashing the bulb on and off.
personally, if i were setting up a new water dragon viv, i would invest in a pulse prop with a night time drop on your ceramic, that way you can control your daytime temp and your night time temp with the one stat alleviating the need for a supplimentary heat source, and also cos it does the night time drop automatically you don't have to ensure your there at roughly the same time every night to turn it down and morning to turn it up it's all controlled by a timer, and if you put your uvb tube on a timer too it makes life sooo much easier.

hope this helps

Thats not strictly true, ive used 60watt ceramics with mat stats for years when i had small vivs as long as the power rating is within the tolerences then there is no problem, as long as the species involved are not critical with the temp drops between on and off

Yeah, i go on the species requirements more than anything, you can also use a 100watt ceramic in a 3ft viv on one too
