depends what's going in it.. if it doesn't need high humidity then contiboard is a popular choice. Following that usually MDF.

I used MDF with an exterior ply bottom for my viv's, make sure the edges are sealed with a sealant of some sort
Melamine is commonly used for viv's and again all edges should be sealed to stop water getting into the wood.

If you use MDF do you just paint the outside the colour of the room or leave it? MDF isn't very appealing to look at compared to a decent bit of ply.

I'm only asking because I think I will end up making my new viv ouf of 22mm MDF

If you use MDF or PLY it has to be sealed inside or it will fall apart the first time the inhabitant p. Use several coats of a water based varnish and run it with heat until it stops smelling, then you can think about putting animals in.
With contiboard (and MDF and PLY perhaps) you have to seal the joints with aquarium sealant

i made mine using a large frame of beech i think it was then used oak paneling to 'skin' it inside and out. we put polystyrene tiles glued between the two for insulation. we used yacht varnish to waterproof it and its been cooking for a good couple of weeks and the smell has almost gone.

shame its too big to go up the stairs to my room! ..... which idiot did the measuring!? lol

It's really a matter of personal preference really. We chose white 15mm melamine as it's easy to wipe clean and we have the luxury of keeping everything in a rep room so they didnt need to 'blend' in with any house decor.

If you use 22mm the resulting viv can be quite heavy - especially when you add in the weight of the glass etc...so just bear weight in mind when designing it - we found this out to our cost!!!

melamine every time just comes in lots of finishes and easy to clean. no problem with mdf but 22mm is quite big, could get away with 18mm, saves money and weight then!
