Default Newbie! Heatmats???

I'm getting a leopard gecko in the new year and i'm currently researching all the things i need for a setup. One thing i'm a bit unsure of is the heatmat. Do you put it under the viv itself? Or inside the viv but under the substrate? My friend has a leopard gecko and she has stuck her heatmat on one side of the viv (inside). I'm a bit confused!

Also do you need a lightbulb inside aswell?? If so what kind?

Thanks!
Beccy

Heatmat's go on the outside. I have never heard of one that goes inside(?)
I guess you could stick it to a tile and then put that in the tank.

I don't keep lizards so can't comment on mat location I'm afraid.

The heat mat should cover 1/3rd of the floor of the vivarium.

If you have a glass tank then it should be placed underneath the tank.

If you have wood, then inside, underneath the substrate, ensuring it is away from water bowls. It must be covered by substrate though.
