Crazy Hoglet - HELP/ADVICE

hello

can anyone help me or give me some advice.

I have a African Pygmy Hedgehog and he was shy at first but became a bit more inquisative.

but over the last few days he has been running around his cage like a maniac and when i get him out he just constantly runs away or trys to run back towards his cage. I even found him at the side of his wheel tonight - he had climbed up the plastic cage wall to the top of his wheel. Im not sure if he was stuck but I got him down just in case.

Im really worried his unhappy but I dont know what i can do to help make him happier and more cuddly. I have looked everywhere for help on this but cant find anything so any help is much appriceated.

He is generally tame and doesnt ball up much at all - until recently. he also seems very jumpy.

i have only had him since september, but i want him to have a good happy life

What is your set up like?

Do you have a cage with bars? It may be worth putting something round the bottom of it so it can not climb and hurt itself. I have heard of hogs breaking their legs from getting stuck in the bars.

I dont think there is really anything to worry about.... just sounds like you have a very headstrong and independent hoggie. I have 3 and they are all very much different.

Have you considered a playpen so then it can not run off? I know several hog owners that find them useful.

And if all else fails mealworm bribes are useful!

I have got a cage from zooplus. its all plastic but with a wire roof for good ventaltaion. so i cant work out how he climbed up the wall.

I was thinking a playpen so he could have more of a runabout but i cant find one suitable as they all seem to be made of wire - do you know any plastic runs and where i can get one.

someone bought a fabric one in p@h the other day - they said it was really good - in the doggy section as she origionally went for a dog arrier but picked that up by mistake but decided to keep it as it was really good - I think it had a top cover too
