In a word No, they do not have to be registered but some breeders prefer to register with one of the societies to keep track of kin and breedings from different keepers

It is a good idea if you are going to breed to register with one of the societies, it acts like the dog pedigree network

most reputable breeders register thier hedgehogs
it is a database to help keep track of lineage and bring up any potential problems.
if you live in the UK you should register with the UK registry which is a branch of the international registry. all info is collected here and sent on to the IHR about once a month to be added to thier main data base

there is also an ireland branch and a canadian branch, but they are all part of the IHR

the UK branch also now registers anything in europe
