the pygmy hog forum was a great help for me- everyone on there are really helpful and friendly, and they will help you learn everything before you get a hog, and even help you find a good local breeder
if you plan on breeding eventually, i would really advise keeping a single hog for a good while first, as you need to get used to what is and isnt normal in behaviour etc. in which case you might be better off getting a male first, as a female will need to be at a particular age for her first breeding experience, and you wont have long enough to get the right amount of experience in this short time
if you do decide to breed, there are plenty of people on the forum that will help you learn all you need to, and they can inform you of all the problems you might face with litters and inexperienced mothers.
i even went to a members house to handle a few diff aged hogs with all different temperaments, so i had a good idea of what they were like if you did/didnt socialise them properly! good luck finding the perfect hog!
