Default Breeding Rats

Hey all,
I was thinking of getting two pairs of rats so I can raise my own snake foods. Thing is house is a bit full with vivs, can rats be kept in the garage or is it going to get to cold for them? If they can is it ok to keep two females together and two males together and indroduce only for breeding?
What is th best cage to keep two rats in, They dont have to look nice, need to be cheap and do the job.
Many Thanks
Kris

Depends how cold your garage gets to be honest, offhand I'd probably say not a good idea and would be better inside a heated room. Cage-wise you'd probably be better off with either racks (not cheap) or hunt around ebay for a cheap second hand jenny cage as they will quite happily hold a 1.3 (Male.Female) or 1.4 depending on how you set it out. Hope this helps.

we have 3 pairs of rats in the shed in the garden, when we had them inside the house they didn`t breed much but they now breed loads,we just make sure they have loads of paper and boxes to shred to keep them warm.

basically, if you have them too cool over the winter when kept outdoors, they will slow down or stop breeding

if you are breeding for food.. then there is no point paying to house and feed them, if they are not producing litters. so where ever you chose to keep them, just make sure its warm

keeping a 0.2 and a 2.0 i personally would not go with.. you may get agression between the boys and girls on re-introduction, and i would think you would almost certainly get agression between the two boys if you re-introduced them after they had been running with the girls.

big cheap cages.. fishtanks.. or second hand ones off ad-trader

i got 2 males and 2 females in mine
the males dont fight and get along well
then again i spend half my time playing with them all
i had to sep the females though as 1 mum was nicking the others babies and then she started to attack the other babies
dont know why but she seems happy on her own with her 15 babies lol x
