Mice are widely available- but can't you just buy frozen? Probably cheaper in the long run, if you factor in cages, feeding etc.
Lots of people like to know the quality of there mice. You never know how many times a mouse has been thawed/frozen before you get it, also you don't know what it has been feed fed, how it has been kept etc.
I know that if I had the space I would breed my own mice.. just gonna have to wait till I move out :]
Point taken- but then you have to consider the best and most painless killing methods- having seen a few 'chewed' snakes, I wouldn't want to take my chances with live ones.

I'd actually recommend multis if you are doing home breeding. They smell less, give you larger litters and are larger as adults while the babies are comparable to mice sizes. Only real downside I've found is that mine bite!
To stop the smell you can put a bit of vanilla extract in there water so there wee doesnt smell as bad...
and you can put cat litter under there substrate...
it actually works
