hi mate i keep mine in 3 tier cages one for males one for females and some birthing tanks for your females.
when it comes to breeding just put your male in with the female then take him back out a week later
i keep mine on megazorb with plenty of bedding thats it really

Hi John...
I havent bred rats before but i have bred mice so.
And i am also gonna start breeding mice or rats because i now have 9 snakes and i am hoping to get more.
. You can just keep them in tubs.
. they need whter, food, substrate and hide ( optional )
. I've heard that adding vanilla extract to the water can reduce the smell and also putting cat litter under the substrate helps lots...
. They can eat dog food ( it's cheaper )
. You can just put the rats together.
. Only put one male in each tub.
It helps if you have more than one females for every male, to reduce stress!
. Seperate the rats when they are prego.
. you can put prego females together to help eachother.
. If a mum doesn't take care of her babys foster them to another rat that doesn't have many babys.
. water bottle is better than water dish coz you don't have to fill it up as much
Hope this helps...
I will let you know if i've forgot anything

How old should the females be before you start using them for breeding?

If you are planning on breeding lots the best way forward is to get some lab rodent racks.... keep them in 1.3s plenty of food and water clean them out every 7 days a bit of shredded paper for the winter for bedding job done.....
