Fruit Fly maggots that die unexpectedly
Hi Guys,
just wondered if anyone has had this happen to them and has an answer.
Basically, on a few occasions when I've ordered some cultures of live fruit flies from Live Food Warehouse, you can see a few stages already 'going' in the ventilated plastic box. (Maggots, pupae and flies)
Sometimes I find a whole bunch of the maggots(who are nearly big enough to pupate) just seem to loose all signs of life and appear 'longer' and limp?
It is strange as sometimes it only happens to some and the rest are squirming around as normal and I have had it happen in the past to a whole box of them.
I keep them warm in an airing cupboard and they are relatively new cultures so it's not to do with the age. I'm stuck as to know what causes it?
Any thoughts......
