Default Dead Dubias

Hello,

I recently bought 65 Dubias (2 weeks ago) and so far i have found 7 dead (some appeared to be half eaten)

It had a fairly high amount of moisture, so i have added more ventilation in the hope to fix this.

Is there any other possible reasons this could happen?

Also, does anyoneknow any good tricks to get them off the old egg tray?

thanks

Karl

Hey Karl,

If they are eating each other its normally a sign of lack of food/moisture, though from what you said its prob not moisture.

If you have any mold anywhere in your tub this could easily finish off your colony.

To get your dubias off your egg crate, I normally use a spare empty tub which i bang the egg cartons in to side to shake them off and scoop them up from the bottom.

Don t put too much of a vent in your lid btw!!!

I normally feed them butternut squash (heated in microwave), bananas and oranges.. along with their oats and dog biscuits ground up...

I have tried carrots with mine but they were not keen... i would only feed them certain greens too (lettuce isnt very nutritious) Just make sure there is some food, in a shallow bowl if poss, and make sure your dried food is well ermm dry?

Ok I have rambled on

Our Roach mix, dry catfood, dry pond fish food, fish flakes, For the protein, wheaties, corn flakes, weetabix and other cereals for the carbohydrate. All put in the sacks that the locusts arrive in and hit with a hammer to crush it.mGreat stress relief.

Dry mix is used as the substrate.

They also get a small piece of cucumber, apple, carrot, with the occasional half grape or bit of butternut squash, along with their dandelion leaves

our basic breeding drawer, the babies are moved every so often into the rearing drawer.

Rearing drawer gets 2 pringles caps with moist in as there are more underneath the trays that I moved to take pics. lol

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice.

How do you move all of the babies without disturbing the adults too much?

Thanks

grumpyoldtrout lol they are fed better than me!

Its going to be hard getting the babies out without disturbing the adults, I shake the whole lot of em in buckets with different sized holes in them so you end up with little ones in the end...

does disturbing the adults not disrupt them too much? i heard they take a month to then "settle" again ready for breeding.

your right it does, so if you don't want to sort them all out I would just pick the ones you wanted from the top egg carton once a week and leave the breeding colony alone...

I have several tubs, all in different cycles of production so I know I can empty one tub of juveniles and then leave for months while the other tubs are busy breeding (if that makes any sense?)
