top one is a multispinosa

I don't think the bottom one is though. Looks like a young vieja, possibly a young herichthys. Not sure one species. It could be vieja melanurus but the orange eye would go against this.

Problem with young cichlids, a lot of them look very similar. Roughly how big is it?

Both are H. multispinosa. In fact they look like a male-female pair.

OP: You will get more definite answers on a specialised fish forum.

multispinosa are much deeper bodied than that. The whole shape of the fish is wrong. Plus the patterning is different. Also they don't have bright orange eyes. They have golden coloured eyes.

What do you think it is, then? If it isn't a multispinosa the only other cichlid that remotely comes to mind is Tilapia mariae (see link below) but honestly I doubt it.

like i said earlier in the thread. I think it could be a vieja or herichthys species. not sure on the exact ID as it looks quite young. Once it matures id will be much easier to do.

As for your two sugested options being the 'only' possibilities. There's loads of cichlids that have that basic shape and colouration at some point in there life, usually when juvenile.

It's not a multispinosa. They are much more oval shaped, this is too rectangular and the eyecolour is wrong as well.

I may be wrong but I really don't think I am. I know it's not helpful to say it's not something without saying what it is, but it's just not a multispinosa. Like I said the shape is wrong, the eye is wrong, the colouration is similar but still not the typical patterning of a multispinosa.
