Default Thinking of building a " Wild " Pond

I've already got a huge pond full of Koi which has 3 differant sections, but obviously Koi and things like frogs and newts don't mix well so I generally take the frogs out when I see them, so I'm thinking of building a smaller pond higher up the garden for frogs, newts and other wildlife to forage in, does anybody have anything like this, Im thinking of sticking a large sheet of liner down on a slant, for things to get in and out, and then placing rocks around the liner to keep it down and to make it look a little neater, and then plant lots of plants around that. Ill also put a few plants in the water and rocks for newts, any other ideas are welcome and ill keep you updated on what happens.

I used to do that, and it worked well. But unfortunately I don't think you'll be able to keep them all separate as frogs will wander.

I also did one with a washing up basin, as they can be bought for next to nothing. Just buried it and filled it with water and used large pebbles. That worked pretty well.

I've just dug a pond and I've no idea what to put in it.

It's a 7' circle. I reckon it's nearer 8' long though - More of an oval shape. Quite deep too. Dunno whether to make it a wild one or not.

Get some Koi, Thats what Ive got in my main pond, Put loads of plants in the centre to attract insects and stuff, soon it will be thriving!

Update: Ive dug out the hole and ive placed the tub in with rocks around it, Ive also found a big slate white ive put at an angle to allow access in and out of the pond, now Ive just got to fill it and then I'm going to go find some plants later

those are good projects... good experience. i'd mimic nature if i were to attempt my own pond... the internet has tons of info on these things...

a small pond you can fiddle with would be great....

i already have a pond... i couldn't even come close to replicating it... although, i'd use it for a resource to stock any pond i tried to build...

i can look for a good link if you want... might have some neat tricks..

here's my pond... where i play around at..
click

i'll look for some pond info...

I have a wild pond at home that my dad made, it's about 6 foot in diameter, and only about a foot deep in the middle, but it attracts loads of wildlife. There is some pretty big rocks around the back of it, with crevices and holes which I think the frogs like to go in. Loads of reeds and stuff, it looks great I think! This year my mum counted 70 frogs at once haha. When I was little I collected loads of stickleback from a nearby brook, and put them in the pond, and they seem tobe thriving. We also get quite a few dragonflies and damselflies which is always nice to see.

So anyway, I think wild ponds are great, I definately think you should have one! My dad used some sort of liner, and it's held up very well for years, added some rocks, a few plants, and that was it!

To be honest I think everyone should try and make there garden nature friendly, It annoys me to see gardens that are fully patio'd and no plants or anything, I think every garden should at least have a small part with plants, trees and even a pond, and a birdhouse obviously!
