Default Crayfish??

Anyone know anything about them,a my mates little sister found some in her school, but her mother was just talking to me and asked if i knew anything about them, which i dont.

She's put them in thier old fish tank (and she's treated the tank).
Im not here to hear people moan about her looking after it,but im here asking for any info about them, she's not too sure where they've came from,it must of been kids took them into the school and her daughter brought it home, well there was two but the one was dead when she had found them..

So like i said it must of been kids messing about with them..

Can you get any pics?

There's only one species in the UK which you can keep in captivity.
They're either native (which I believe are endangered - illegal to keep) or have been illegally imported.

I did ask her for a picture but she didnt send me one we just carried on talking, ive shown her the website, and she said she'd keep me updated ect,so ill talk to her tomorrow and ask her,we eaither think one escaped from a shop (food resturant) and the kids picked it up and brought it to school..
Also theres a pond near our area which through certain periods there's always tadpoles ect there so i could of came from the shallow waters there or sumthing we're not 100% sure but she's settling it down and gonna mail me tomorrow i guess.

The Signal Crayfish is somewhat legal too - it can be kept in certain parts of the UK without any special licence (not all parts though, someone in Plymouth can keep it but not someone in Yorkshire) but trading of it is restricted in all areas, so basically the only specimens legal are feral ones caught in a local river.

So in theory there are 2 species that can be kept legally in the UK.

Are you sure youve got that right mate? I catch signal crayfish out of the river thames at lechlade, they are the american specie that escaped over here years ago, they are illegal pests killing off our native crayfish with a fugus which they carry and are immune to it.
You cant keep them or sell them anywhere in the UK, also if you catch them out of any UK water source, youre not even allowed to throw them back in !!
The british native species (i think its called white claw or something like that) is endangered & fully protected.

Yeah I'm pretty sure, read it on the Defra site, you have to catch them yourself though from a body of water in the UK where it is legal to do so. All in all it's a way to get more crayfish out of our local rivers.

You can't buy them though.

crawdads we call them... and we're swimming in them... how can they be rare?... they live in every creek here... i've kept them in tanks before and sold them at the shop for fish food... they are easy to take care of.

... i can't imagine them being scarce in any way... crawdads are like leaves here... just everywhere... i was going to take some crawdad pics while i was camping but i thought they were too common to be worthy.

... i don't eat them though... in a survival situation here you can get fat just by eating crawdads... they are everywhere here.... i had one as a kid that was at least 11 inches long... a lobster basically...

they like bacon and i use them to clean my dishes while camping... just put your dirty pans in a creek and viola! they go to town on them dishes... clean as a whistle!

Over here we have 2 ( i think ) species of crayfish. One is our native and the other was an alien imported and is now killing off our native ones.
