Default New tank

Hi all.

I did post in newbie section but i think it's probably more fitting here.

I am going to rebuild one of my old fish tanks that i've had stored since i bought the large tank for my terrapins (which are now having to leave me )

I'm looking towards getting a couple of small goldies as my daughter 13months old loves watching all bright coloured fish when we goto the aquatic shops.

Apart from the goldfish, i would love to have some different specimens in the tank that she can sit and watch. When i was a kid i had the same but i wouldnt remember now what else we had in ours. I used to love it so i am sure she will too.

I've been thinking towards getting something like a dwarf frog as i've read up their 100% aquatic. Also contemplating a newt or something. But any extra idea's would be awesome.

Colourful OR unusual is what i am looking for. also pretyt much 100% aquatic and freshatwater. I work away a lot so looking for something that doesnt stir too far away from maintenance of general freshwater fish.

Thanks to you all in advance.

Matt

First off, what size tank is it?
Goldfish are coldwater, as where dwarf frogs are tropical, so that'll be a no-no.
Newts should be kept on their own as fish will nibble their legs off.

Is the tank going to be coldwater or tropical?

Normal Goldfish demand large tanks, ideally ponds, due to the adult size of 14 inches they can attain.

The fancy varieties such as Oranda, Ranchu, Moor, Telescopes etc are best kept on their own, or with the more peaceful cold water loaches such as the Weather Loach. They demand well filtered water, and a good diet comprosong mainly of a sinking pellet. The Hikari brand produce some excellent diets for these kind of fish.

I would suggest going in the direction if Tropical Fish- there are a vast amount of different species that are compatible, with an enormous range of colours available. If you want small, pretty fish, I would suggest a shoal of 6-8 Neon or Cardinal Tetra, a group of Guppies, perhaps a pair of Apistogramma species (Dwarf Cichlids), and a group of 3 Corydoras catfish for the bottom of the tank.

Thanks for the replies!

I've a variety of tank sizes so at the mo it's weighing up the options in an attempt to choose which to get started on again. One of the main reason's i'm releasing the terrapins is becuase i live in a small home and my daughter keeps getting hold of the external filter, just isn't safe with her now.

I was tld drawf frogs or newts may be an option. It is only going to be coldwater for the time being. If my fish were to get too large at any one point i always have family friends who have various ponds and such their willing to fill or hold them until they've got other homes.

Like i said, it may sound harsh but these are for the entertainment of my daughter, i was looking at neons but i feel they may be a tad small to keep her occupied, my local store had some catty in there this week i dont know exact type but was a god 3-4 pounders (british fisherman lol). She was hooked just stood still (very unusual for her) and stood in awe as it swam up and down its tank.

my brother is also starting his tank again which is only 25lt as during the week whilst i work my mom and brother look after the lil one. So any ideas for him too? again it would only be a coldwater set. he loves his koi's and ghosties but he knows it aint an option.

I hope you mean rehoming?
As releasing a non native species is illegal...and wrong...

25 litre... honestly, a few shrimp and some snails!
Not many fish can go in there, and certainly no coldwater ones.

Coldwater tanks should be over 100 litres, preferably larger. Most coldwater fish get large. The only 2 common exceptions are mountain minnows and hillstream loaches.

Dont worry i know the feeling with turtles. I only bought the map turtle (35 bloody quid mind you) because of the state it was kept in but i didnt care, gonna seriously miss these 3 they are just so awesome. And yeah i know about the whole coldwater gets big and such, but this is more of a: for the time being situation. I am not selling my terrapin setup as once i do manage to get a larger house i'll be starting them again, until then i need space and as explained with the daughter etc. I could even re-instate my current terra tank once i've cleaned it but i will need to use an internal filter. Money is tight at the mo thus why i was considering just using what i had available to me at the moment. Anything i buy would be no more than 5-6cm long at the moment. but i want something a bit more eye catching than neons etc. Out of curiousity what is required to go t a tropical set? Not kept anything except goldies and koi/ghost carp before really.
