Default Pictus randomly died =/

Bought a pictus on Saturday with some colwn loaches to add to our tank.

We have a Spotted Raphael Cat, Redtailed Black shark, tiger Barbs and plec in there already. All of the fish are healthy and the water conditions are fine as we checked them last week. The temps are at 25.

The Pictus was fine this morning swimming around as usual but i went to check now and is dead. any reasoning for this?

Your water conditions can change within a week. How do they compare to that of the shop? Pictus need keeping in shoals really. It's impossible to say why it died, and without a lot more info people could only guess. Except Graylord. Perhaps the benefits of his vast experience may help?

Graylord, what do you think?

I got told they where schoaling fish but then got told that they are territorl (Cant spell it) and fight =/ so one would but fine.

But if all the other fish are healthy would it be the water conditions? I will have to try it tomorrow and get in touch with the shop.

Oh that's a shame. How long is your tank set up? Also, is your water chemistry (pH, KH, GH) the same as that of the LFS? Sometimes dramatic changes in water conditions can cause the sudden death of a new fish.

They're a shoaling fish naturally. All shoaling fish should be kept in a group. If someones told you they're territorial the chances are it's because they've kept one and it's developed this unnatural behaviour. Or they just don't know what they're talking about.

Stress is the number one killer of aquarium fish. Keeping a shoaling species on it's own can cause this. And as stated a change in water conditions combined with the stress of being introduced into a new tank etc can lead to fish deaths.

P.S I hope you have a big tank.

Aaron you may simply have been sold a dodgy fish ,they are not that bothered in a closed environment whether they are kept singly or in groups.

The shoaling protective instinct goes out of the window in the safety of an aquarium ,quite often naturally shoaling fish start to bicker when they don`t need safety in numbers.

They are however one of the first to expire if oxygen levels are not up to snuff.

Regards

I had a problem last week, where the fish (Shark and Barbs) where upside down on the sufrace of the water, will that be because of Oxygen?

I put an air stone in a efw days before we got the Pictus, but do you think that could be the reason?
