Default someone explain marine tanks to me

what is the main difference between a fish only tank and a reef aquarium as i hear about sometimes? ... could someone help as im confused or just point me in the right direction to another site/forum.

Id love to have a tank with fish and live corals in, but dont know what this is classed as, and so wouldnt know where to begin with pricing up equipment etc.

Thank you in advance, Spuddy.

Fish only is what it says on the tin. Fish, with no live rock/corals. A reef needs live rock for corals to live.

thank you sir, i wasnt sure if "fish only" ...included something such as live rock and corals and a reef aquarium was something way more complicated.

It doesn't have to be too complex if you do your research, fish only is much much simpler. You could go for live rock and fish then add corals at a later date, without liverock you wont have that option. Liverock on average is about £10 per kilo.

To be honest, it could be hundreds. Depends really. Things like protein skimmers, filters, lighting, heating, power heads as well as things like sand, salt, RO water, testing kits (very important). It all mounts up.

S'okay, I'm by no means an expert, but I've done tonnes of reseach and many many hours of reading. Good luck if you decide to go for it Patience and research is the key. You can get second hand set ups for a fraction of the cost.

Your looking at a considerable amount of money, something such as a 250 litre red sea max full set u will cost you in the region of £1200 as well as the upkeep costs on top of that and also the high price of marine fish. One of the main sites you should have a poke around is practical fishkeeping, there are many experienced fishkeepers willing to help out on there, as i don't particularly specialise in marine fish so i am not sure of the best set up but the red sea max is pretty good. Hope that helps in some way.

I agree with everyone else

FO - Fish only. (With dead rock, dead sand.)

FOWLR - Fish Only, With Live Rock. +/- moving inverts.

Reef - Fish, Live Rock, and sessile inverts.
