Really gona depend on what sp. you decide to keep as to everything you just asked. Either way they range in size from 8" to 24" so your gona need a big to monster tank.

I would sugest putting two "larger ones" together. Either one or 4-5+.

In general I'd say heat between 77 and 83 with the wattage of heater dependant on tank size. May need more than one.
They're gona be messy and need clean water so try to go for a filter with 5-10 times the GPH of your tank or multiple smaller filters.
Also 15%-20% water changes weekly should be ok but keep checking with a test kit for Amonia, Nitrite, Nitrate. The bigger the tank the easier it is to keep water quality nice as everything is diluted more.

Untill you know what sp. your gona get you cant decide on anything. Well one thing is for sure-It isnt going to be cheap!

Read the book and decide what you want then go from there. Its not going to be a quick process but well worth it in the end.

Make sure you include plants in any setup. My two red bellies are happier with clumps of plants to retire too - and I actually see more of them when they have somewhere they feel secure in retiring too.

Totally agree about the filter. I usually have two externals working on my 4ft 6in tank, one with a spray bar at the surface which just aerates the water without giving too much turbulence.

Also make sure you get a good pair of aquarium tongs - I use the ones that are sold for planting deep tanks. They are useful for picking out any uneaten food quickly, and doesn't spook them as much as trying to get it out with a net.
